When you were making Isaac and SMB did you have to make a huge design doc or did you just write down all of your ideas and start putting it together?

i dont really do design docs, i just draw down basic ideas on paper so i can easily remember stuff i want to when designing. 

i like having a loose idea of what i want so it allows for more improvisational design.
